The Problem

Minimally invasive surgeries are among the most challenging to perform, due to difficult access, reduced vision and maneuverability and lack of information on what to expect inside the patient. For this reason, it is very important that surgeons have access to realistic simulators to plan all the difficult steps of the interventions well ahead of time.
ASTRA’s main objective is to create an augmented reality based surgical training system centered on Twin-to-twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), a condition that occurs in monochorionic twins where both fetuses are connected to one single placenta. Our technology “Augmented reality Surgical TRAining (ASTRA)” aims to train prospective surgeons on high fidelity, interactive and collaborative simulation fetal surgeries. We have already created MVPs for Pre-Surgical inspection of the intervention and for Training prospective surgeons on virtual reality.

Purpose

To shorten the training time providing an extremely realistic environment and feedback in a Mixed/Augmented reality solution and initial internal tests show that we could be able to cut by half their training time.
